The annual international Robocup competition has the ultimate goal of developing a humanoid robotic team that can defeat the human World Cup soccer team by 2050! In June, with more than 1000 participants in some 200 teams from 30 countries, 2002 Robocup attracted some 120,000 spectators.

Defending champions in the Sony Legged League, the School of Computer Science and Engineering’s rUNSWift team came a close second at the championships in Fukuoka, Japan. The Grand Final was a repeat of 2001 with rUNSWift against Carnegie Mellon University and despite going down in a penalty shoot-out, the rUNSWift team’s efforts are still an outstanding success, especially in view of the high quality, international competition.

In the Legged Challenges event, rUNSWift team retained the championship for the fourth year running and in an Australian first, the rUNSWift Simulation team made the finals and achieved their best results to date, claiming seventh place in the world.
