HOME : CURRENT STUDENTS : ACADEMIC ADVISING AND ENROLMENT HELP

A useful resource containing detailed information about all the programs (degrees), plans (disciplinary streams) and courses (subjects) offered at the University is the UNSW Online Handbook. The Handbook includes information on program structure and what courses to enrol in for a particular program. It also has information on Class Timetables and General Education. You will refer to the Handbook throughout your time at UNSW so it’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with it now. The Online Handbook can be accessed at www.handbook.unsw.edu.au.

If you still have questions after you have read through the Handbook, you should contact your School Office. Details of where they are located and how to contact them appear on the back of the enclosed map. Your School Office will be able to help you with program selection, courses to enrol in, advanced standing and a number of other administrative matters related to your enrolment.

Timetabling

Students accept offers and enrol in courses online through myUNSW and are expected to manage their own timetabling and enrolment throughout their studies. Managing your timetable can be quite challenging the first time round so use the following tips to help you:

  • Students are able to view available class timetables online through the UNSW Online Handbook. You will need to spend a little time working out what classes fit best with other classes
  • Begin by printing out a blank timetable and then sit down with a pencil and eraser. A blank timetable can be downloaded from www.eng.unsw.edu.au/studentcentre
  • Start by selecting a lecture stream for each course as these tend to be fixed and will not be changed, though some courses will have more than one lecture stream available
  • Next pencil in your tutorials and laboratories. You may need to do this a couple of times before you can get a clash-free timetable
  • Once you have completed a draft timetable, you can begin enrolling online. You do this via myUNSW using a Program, Catalogue or Class search
  • It is important to remember that you may not get it right the first time and may need to begin your timetable again. You can do this by dropping and adding courses
  • If you have a timetable clash try selecting different tutorials or lab times. If you have exhausted all options and you cannot resolve the issue, you will need to visit the course owner of that particular course. E.g. For Physics Courses you should go to the Physics School Office, for Civil Engineering Courses you should go to the Civil Engineering School Office – see the back of the enclosed map for details
  • If you get stuck; on every screen of myUNSW Online Enrolment you will find a “HELP” link displayed in the top right hand corner. Just click on the link to obtain assistance and further information about the screen you are on

Please Note:

  • Most students are enrolled full-time. This means you should not expect to have a free day in your timetable or to have Friday off
  • Timetable clashes are not permitted for first year students
  • Most tutorials and labs do not begin until Week 2 of Session
  • Students have until the end of Week 2 to have their enrolment finalised. You can do this by adding and dropping courses online via myUNSW
  • Still having trouble; visit your school office for help

Enrolment Support

If you need further information about accepting your offer, or are having problems doing so, or if you experience technical difficulties enrolling online you should contact the UNSW Enrolment Support Centre on telephone: 9385 1110, email: enrol@unsw.edu.au, or in person: Level 2 of the Library. Combined Degree Programs

Students enrolled in Combined Degree Programs who have questions about the non-engineering component of their degree will need to speak to School Office staff from the relevant Faculty (Arts and Social Sciences; Business; Science; or Law). See the back of the enclosed map for their contact and location details.

For administrative enquiries like these you should go to Student Central. Later on you may refer to them for advice on academic transcripts, graduations, examinations, special consideration and program leave. An A-Z Guide of Student Central services is available at www.studentcentral.unsw.edu.au.

Student ID cards
Student ID cards can be collected from E-Spot (refer to the enclosed map) once you have completed your enrolment. Queues can be quite long during the first weeks of session so it is recommended you try and collect prior to the start of session.
