New Enrolling Students
Congratulations in joining one of the most prestigious universities in Australia, The University of New South Wales, Faculty of Engineering.
Newly commencing undergraduate students, who wish to discuss their enrolment with academic staff, are encouraged to attend an Academic Advising Day on Thursday 29th January 2009. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions about program selection, choices available to them and what courses to enrol in.
Students will also be able to attend a lecture on general academic advice along with a Q&A semester, presented by Dr David Clements (Associate Dean Academic, Faculty of Engineering).
For more information on the UNSW Academic Advising Day please click here.
The Engineering Orientation Week (OWEEK) Welcome will be held on 26th February at 9.45am in Clancy Auditorium. Click the link below for further details http://www.oweek.info/
Students who are unable to attend the Academic Advising Day can contact their program office directly –see below for contact details and office locations.
A useful resource containing detailed information about all the programs (degrees), plans (disciplinary streams) and courses (subjects) offered at the University is the UNSW Online Handbook. This includes information on program structure and what courses to enrol in for a particular program. The Online Handbook can be accessed at www.handbook.unsw.edu.au.
Timetabling and Enrolling
Students accept offers and enrol in courses online through myUNSW and are expected to manage their own timetabling and enrolment throughout their studies. Managing your timetable can be quite challenging the first time round so use the following tips to help you:
- Students are able to view available class timetables online through the UNSW Online Handbook. You will need to spend a little time working out what classes fit best with other classes
- Click on the link below for information on choosing courses http://www.eng.unsw.edu.au/current/year1/enrolment.htm
- Begin by printing out a blank timetable and then sit down with a pencil and eraser. A blank timetable can be downloaded from www.eng.unsw.edu.au/studentcentre
- Start by selecting a lecture stream for each course as these tend to be fixed and will not be changed, though some courses will have more than one lecture stream available
- Next pencil in your tutorials and laboratories. You may need to do this a couple of times before you can get a clash-free timetable
- Once you have completed a draft timetable, you can begin enrolling online. You do this via myUNSW using a Program, Catalogue or Class search
- It is important to remember that you may not get it right the first time and may need to begin your timetable again. You can do this by dropping and adding courses
- If you have a timetable clash try selecting different tutorials or lab times. If you have exhausted all options and you cannot resolve the issue, you will need to visit the course owner of that particular course. E.g. For Physics Courses you should go to the Physics School Office, for Civil Engineering Courses you should go to the Civil Engineering School Office – See below for list of School Offices and their locations
- If you get stuck; on every screen of myUNSW Online Enrolment you will find a “HELP” link displayed in the top right hand corner. Just click on the link to obtain assistance and further information about the screen you are on
Please Note:
- Most students are enrolled full-time. This means you should not expect to have a free day in your timetable or to have Friday off
- Timetable clashes are not permitted for first year students
- Students have until the end of Week 1 to have their enrolment finalised. You can do this by adding and dropping courses online via myUNSW
- Still having trouble; visit your school office for help
Students experiencing difficulty with enrolling online should contact the UNSW Student Services Enrolment Support Centre on 9385 1110 or enrol@unsw.edu.au. Students can also visit the Enrolment Support Centre in person. Please refer to https://my.unsw.edu.au/student/commencing/WhereToFindHelp.html for further information, opening hours and their location.
Combined Degree Programs
Students in Combined Degree programs should see the program office for which their enquiry relates. For example, if you will be enrolling in the Electrical Engineering/Commerce program visit the Electrical Engineering & Telecommunications School Office for matters related to the engineering discipline and visit the Australian School of Business for matters related to the commerce discipline. See below for their contact and location details.
Additional Information
UNSW Student Central
As a new student, you may have enquiries concerning advanced standing, direct admissions, fee information and bridging programs. For administrative enquiries like these you should go to Student Central. Later on you may refer to them for advice on academic transcripts, graduations, examinations, special consideration and program leave. An A-Z Guide of Student Central services is available at www.studentcentral.unsw.edu.au.
Student ID cards
Student ID cards can be collected from FMAssist (level 2 Mathews Building, entry via Mathews Pavilions, Map ref F23) once you have completed your enrolment. Queues can be quite long during the first weeks of semester so it is recommended you try and collect prior to the start of semester.
Passwords
For any queries related to your Unipass (lost, forgotten, not working) please contact UNSW IT Services on 9385 1777 or visit their website, www.disconnect.unsw.edu.au.
