The Award
The Dean's Postgraduate Research Award was established
to recognise outstanding research in engineering and applied
sciences. Prizes are awarded for Best Poster Overall ($3000),
and for Runner Up in each of the 5 Faculty Research themes
listed below ($500 each). Prize monies are awarded to
students to support their travel expenses to local and/or
international conferences.

- Mechanics, Structures and Materials
- Engineering Systems, Management and Education
Inaugural Presentation (2005)
The Inaugural Engineering Dean's Awards for Excellence in Postgraduate Research was held on Tuesday 6th December 2005, from 5.00 pm until 7.30 pm in the Tyree Room, The Scientia.
Supriya Pillai from the School of Photovoltaic Engineering won first prize overall.

The five runners up in each of the research themes were:
1. Energy, Resources and the Environment
James Walker (School of Civil and Environmental Engineering) for a poster entitled "The exchange of oxygen at the surface of open waters under wind forcing"
2. Information and Communications
Tatiana Bokareva (School of Computer Science and Engineering) for a poster entitled "SASHA: A self-healing hybrid sensor network architecture"
3. Health, Sport and Entertainment
Henry Ko (Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering) for a poster entitled "Development of vascularised bioengineered tissues"
4. Mechanics, Structures and Materials
Dual poster presenters David Hanson and Wee-Lee Chia (School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering) for a poster entitled "So what's operational modal analysis all about?"
5. Engineering Systems, Management and Education
Ravindra Babu (School of Surveying and Spatial Information Systems for a poster entitled "Comparative study of interpolation techniques for ultra-tight integration of GPS/INS/PL sensors"
Eligibility
Postgraduate research students who have completed at least
2 sessions enrolment (full-time equivalent) in any Faculty
of Engineering research program are eligible to apply for
the award. Only one award will be given per candidate over
their total enrolment period in graduate research within the
Faculty. It is expected that candidates will discuss their
application with their supervisor before submission.
Application Process
Applications Closed September
30th 2005
Candidates should complete the application form and submit
it with their abstract [a 300 word (12 pt font) research description]
to Lynne O’Sullivan (Faculty Office) no later than September
30th. Up to 5 candidates will be short-listed for the prize
from each School (including ADFA engineering schools). Those
short-listed will be informed by October 14th and will be
required to prepare a poster presentation for the Deans Postgraduate
Research Award event to be held on November 10th at 4.30 –
7.30 pm.

Selection Criteria
Candidates will be selected based on meeting the eligibility
requirements and on the quality of the research described
in the abstract. Those short-listed for the prize will be
required to present a poster on their research and final selection
for the Deans Postgraduate Research Award will be based on
quality and originality of research and on the poster presentation.
The poster should be on maximum paper size of A0, and can
be one prepared in the last 12 months for a conference or
other poster presentation (no specific format required).
