The Award

The Deans Award for Excellence in Postgraduate Research was established in 2005 to recognise outstanding research in engineering and applied sciences. Prizes will be awarded for Best Overall Student submission ($3000), as well as several prizes awarded to runners up ($500 each). Prize monies will be awarded to students to support their travel expenses to local and/or international conferences.

Eligibility

PhD students or Masters by Research students who have completed at least two full-time semesters (or part-time equivalent) in a Faculty of Engineering research program are eligible to apply for the award. Applicants must have demonstrated satisfactory progress towards completion of their degree at their most recent Annual Progress Review. Only one award will be given per candidate over their total enrolment period in graduate research within the Faculty. All applicants must be present at the awards ceremony on October 22nd.

It is expected that candidates will discuss their application with their supervisor before submission.

Application Process

Candidates should complete the application form and submit it with their paper [see attached guideline] to Lynne O’Sullivan (Faculty Office) no later than September 18th.

Note to Schools: the Faculty will check on eligibility of candidates and will remove those NOT eligible. Postgraduate coordinators will be contacted to determine whether the student’s progress is satisfactory. If the number of eligible applicants is greater than 50, Heads of School/PG Coordinators will be asked to rank the applicants and Faculty will select the top 50 overall for the final poster competition. ADFA engineering schools are also included. Those short-listed will be informed by October 2nd and will be required to prepare a poster presentation for the Faculty Postgraduate Research Award event to be held on October 22nd at 4.30 to7.30 pm.

Note to Applicants: the poster should be on maximum paper size of A0, and can be one recently prepared for a conference or other poster presentation. Winners will be selected based on the content of the abstract submitted and on a short presentation to judges in front of their poster.
