Dear Students

ENGG1000 enrolment for 2009 is open. The Faculty of Engineering would like to welcome each of you to this exciting course and hope you will enjoy it as much as we enjoy teaching it.

Notes at the course level

ENGG1000 is a Faculty course made up of project streams run by Schools in the Faculty. You may enrol in any project stream. You may change your stream up to the end of Week 2. You will get information in the first lecture to help you finalise your choice, but you MUST finalise your decision on-line (via my eLearning Vista) by Friday 13 March. If you are unsure you have two options:

  1. Enrol for now in the stream run by the School you selected when accepting your offer at UNSW (eg if you selected a program in the School of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications then select the EET project stream). The School running each project stream is identified in the “details” for that class.
  2. Enrol in the stream called 1FLEX. This means you are enrolled in the course and you have until the end of Week 1 to choose your project. Be mindful of the fact that some projects fill up quickly and by choosing 1FLEX and waiting until WEEK1, you may not be able to enrol in the project of your choice. When you select the automatic enrolment facility, you will also be allocated to 1FLEX and you will also need to select a specific project by the end of Week 1.

Notes in the Course Outline

If you want more details on a project that you are interested in, some Schools are running open days to provide more information on their projects. Remember, you must complete your enrolment by Friday 19 March.

About ENGG1000

ENGG1000 Design and Innovation looks at what it means to be an engineering designer. You will see the big picture and how all your studies, such as mathematics and science, fit together. You will also explore some of the professional knowledge and skills that are just as vital to a successful engineering career as the technical ones.

It is activity-based, and you will work together in teams to design a solution to a specified but open-ended problem. A wide range of projects are available, run by the Schools in the Faculty.

Why this website?

ENGG1000 is a complex course, with 10 Schools of the Faculty of Engineering and Materials Science within the Faculty of Science running more than 12 projects. This website is here to help you settle in. There are five main things it will help you with:

  1. Understanding the structure of the course
  2. Enrolling into the course
  3. Selecting your project
  4. Finding out where to go for classes and activities
  5. It provides a link to the Faculty Course Outline for 2009.

Structure of the course

This course is coordinated by the Faculty of Engineering, which also arranges some common activities. But most of the course is taught by each School of the Faculty through the projects that they offer you. Although there are differences in the types of activities offered by each School the overall assessment is designed to ensure equivalence.

Although each School offers a design project from a specialists view, you may select any of the projects you wish, independent of any decisions you made when you accepted a place in Engineering at UNSW.

Project selection

Descriptions of each of the projects and more information and guidance on finalising your project selection will be given during the first week of the course. Do not miss the first lecture! Some Schools will be running open days to provide more information on their projects.

Project selection will be via the university’s online learning system “my eLearning Vista”. You can access this course by visiting the following URL: http://vista.elearning.unsw.edu.au. If you cannot access this site you should first contact my eLearning Vista Support at http://support.vista.elearning.unsw.edu.au If the problem is not rectified then contact the IT Service Desk at this URL: http://www.its.unsw.edu.au
