BI - 1 Computational prediction of transcription factor binding

CSE Project - Dr Bruno Gaeta (bgaeta@unsw.edu.au) and Dr Mike Bain mike@cse.unsw.edu.au

The identification of DNA sites that bind regulatory proteins is one of the "holy grails" of bioinformatics. This project aims to test a range of approaches including machine learning to improve the prediction of regulatory regions in DNA by taking into account sequence and structural constraints. Ultimately, identification of transcription factor binding sites is key to understanding the mechanisms of gene regulation and predicting gene regulatory networks from genome sequences. A potential outcome of the research is improvements in regulatory site prediction methods in DNA.
