WS - 1 Spreadsheet-Like Interface for Enterprise Service Bus and Business Objects

Spreadsheet applications are arguably the tool of choice used by knowledge workers to manipulate, visualize and analyze data. This trend is now clearly acknowledged by major enterprise application vendors who all provide some form of integration of their software with existing office applications. One can mention, for example, Applix (TM1), Business Objects (Live Office integration), Cognos (Cognos Office Connection), SAP (Duet and BEx Analyzer), SAS (Microsoft Office add-in), Oracle's BI Spreadsheet Add-in, Actuate's e.Spreadsheet, or Microsoft Biztalk (Excel-based BAM (Business Activity Monitoring software). This summer project centers on the development of complements to spreadsheet systems to facilitate the manipulation of complex and dynamic data in the spreadsheet environment. You will be working in a friendly team of researchers comprising of an associate professor, senior researchers and p/g students.

This project is in direct collaboration with SAP. No particular subject is required, but taking E-Commerce System implementation will be an advantage. No prior knowledge on Web service development is required, but experience in C# and MS .NET is essential.

WS - 2 A Rich Interface based Facility for Analyzing and Querying Service Data Sources

Web services are programmatically accessible applications over the Web and are emerging as the technology of choice for application development and integration. Academia and software industrial vendors such as IBM, Microsoft, Sun, Oracle, and BEA are investing heavily in R&D to enable Web services to realize their potential. Since web services are exposed in open environments, they are self-described. Currently, one hot research issues is to include as a part of service descriptions not only its interfaces, but its observable behavior, which is expressed using service protocols. This project is in the context of a larger project called ServiceMosaic, which aims to develop a model-driven environment for modeling, analyzing and managing Web services. The environment has been partially implemented using the Eclipse platform by a team of researchers from UNSW and HP labs. This summer project centers on the implementation of a framework for querying service execution logs. Your responsibility will be to implement a new plug-in consisting of GUI to execute query that retrieve relevant log entry from service execution logs, process those entries for conversation correlation and filter them based on various constraints express on protocol models. You will be working in a friendly team of researchers comprising of an associate professor, senior researchers and p/g students.

The result of this research will be incorporated into ServiceMosaic, a large research framework for Web service modeling, analysis and management, which parts of this research has been accepted in prestigious conferences. No particular subject is required, but taking E-Commerce System implementation will be an advantage. No prior knowledge on Web service development is required, but experience in J2EE or MS .NET is essential.

WS - 3 An Interactive Environment for Web Services Protocol Mining and Debugging

Web services are programmatically accessible applications over the Web and are emerging as the technology of choice for application development and integration. Academia and software industrial vendors such as IBM, Microsoft, Sun, Oracle, and BEA are investing heavily in R&D to enable Web services to realize their potential. Since web services are exposed in open environments, they are self-described. Currently, one hot research issues is to include as a part of service descriptions not only its interfaces, but its observable behaviour, which is expressed using service protocols. WS-4 Web Services Adapter Development Tool

Web services are programmatically accessible applications over the Web and are emerging as the technology of choice for application development and integration. Academia and software industrial vendors such as IBM, Microsoft, Sun, Oracle, and BEA are investing heavily in R&D to enable Web services to realize their potential. One hot research topic is to identify if two or more Web services can collaborate by looking at their interfaces and protocols, i.e., observable behaviors of Web services and how to enable incompatible Web services to collaborate. This project is in the context of a larger project called ServiceMosaic, which aims to develop a model-driven environment for modeling, analysing and managing Web services. The environment has been partially implemented using the Eclipse platform by a team of researchers from university and industry. This summer project centers around the implementation of adapters for Web services. Your responsibility is to implement new plug-ins consisting of GUI and algorithms for identifying mismatches of Web service protocols and developing adapters. You will be working in a friendly team of researchers comprising of an associate professor, senior researchers and p/g students. If you are interested, please contact one of the supervisors.
