HOME : CURRENT STUDENTS : ENROLMENT ADVICE FOR NEW ENGINEERING STUDENTS

The first step in your enrolment is

Choosing courses

In Year 1 of your BE, you are required to complete 5 core courses and 3 electives.

1. Core courses

Every BE student must complete the following.

(a) 2 mathematics courses
    MATH1131/1141 (Higher) Mathematics 1a – session 1
    MATH1231/1241 (Higher) Mathematics 1b – session 2
See Which mathematics course should I choose? for help with your decision.

(b) 1 computing course
    ENGG1811 or COMP1911 or COMP1971
Both these courses are available in both sessions.
See Which computing course should I choose? for help with your decision.

(c) 1 physics course
    PHYS1131/1121 (Higher) Physics 1a
Higher Physics is only available in session 1; standard physics is available in both sessions.
See Which physics course should I choose? for help with your decision.

(d) the design course
    ENGG1000 Enginering Design
This is available in both sessions.

Electives

To see the list of available electives, consult the Year 1 Engineering Electives List. Pick 3, but consider ...

(i) Although you are free to choose any electives, too ensure that you can start a standard second year program, at least one of your electives should be from

        CHEM1011 / CHEM1031 / MATS1101
    or COMP1921 Computing 1b
    or CVEN1300 / MECH1300 / MINE1300 Engineering Mechanics
    or PHYS1231 Higher Physics 1b

We expect you to do at least one of these. Only CHEM/MATS does not have a prerequisite.

(ii) Many of the electives are available in both sessions, but be careful. Some courses have prerequisites that you need to do first. Some courses you need to do in session 1 because they are prerequisites.

(iii) To proceed with each engineering specialisation in Stage 2, you will need to have chosen the correct elective in Stage 1. Otherwise you may not be able to graduate in minimum time. Consult the Year 1 Engineering Electives List to see which elective is required in Stage 1 by each program.

If you cannot decide what to choose or how to distribute your courses between sessions, then you might get some ideas from the Sample Programs designed by the various Schools within the Faculty.

Having chosen the courses for this session, you are ready to log-in to myunsw and complete your enrolment.

Remember:
You are welcome to speak to someone, if you want help clarifying your choice of courses.
