The University of New South Wales (UNSW) was established in 1949 as a University of Technology. Although it has grown to include a broad range of disciplines, engineering remains one of its largest and most important faculties. UNSW offers engineering degrees through the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Science. UNSW is a leading research university in Australia and the Faculty of Engineering has an outstanding track record in research with a high level of success in securing national competitive grants and other publicly funded grants. Many of its staff have received international recognition for their work and, as a result, courses incorporate the most up-to-date technology and have a strong applied component. Students have the option of taking numerous double degrees, including joint degrees with other faculties. All of the four-year engineering degrees are fully accredited by Engineers Australia.
The Faculty of Engineering at UNSW is recognised as the pre-eminent Engineering faculty in Australia and offers the widest choice of engineering courses within the Schools of Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Sciences and Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Mining Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Photovoltaic and Renewable Energy Engineering, and Surveying and Spatial Information Systems. The Environmental Engineering degree program, established in close consultation with over 20 organisations in the areas of consulting, industry and government, was the first of its kind in New South Wales. The School of Photovoltaic and Renewable Energy Engineering was the first organisation internationally to offer undergraduate training in the area of Photovoltaics and Solar Energy.
International students from accredited institutions may be eligible for the study abroad program, which provides them with the opportunity to undertake full-time study at UNSW for credit toward a degree program in their home country. More than 400 students each year from countries all over the world study at UNSW through this program.
