Admission

Admission to the UNSW Faculty of Engineering is based on academic merit. Students seeking admission to an undergraduate program must be able to provide evidence that they have the potential for tertiary study. Age alone is not a sufficient criterion for admission. UNSW does not consider work experience for admission purposes.

For admission purposes there are two groups of applicants to UNSW programs:

  • Local applicants are Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents or New Zealand citizens
  • International applicants are citizens of a country other than Australia or New Zealand.
All local applicants must apply through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) . Your ATAR can be used to gain entry into University.

Admission Process for Entry to UNSW Faculty of Engineering Programs in 2010
ATAR ≥ 91.00 Direct entry based on ATAR + any HSC Plus bonus points
ATAR 81.00 - 90.95 FEAS

For students with an ATAR of at least 91.00, admission is based on the bonused ATAR, that is, the ATAR plus any HSC Plus bonus points awarded. For those who don't have the required ATAR or the right background, or need to adjust to living and studying in Australia, there are other options available through Alternative Entry pathways or the DipSET.

FEAS - Faculty of Engineering Admission Scheme
If you anticipate achieving a ATAR between 81.00 to 90.95, you are strongly encouraged to submit an application for an interview under FEAS to maximise your opportunities for admission. At the interview, you will be able to meet with Engineering academics, exchange information and show how you are suited to engineering studies. Application for admission is via UAC .
See full details at FEAS .

HSC Plus
There is a strong correlation between Year 12 course performance and success in first year university studies. HSC Plus is a bonus point system which rewards students who perform well in Australian Senior Secondary Certificate courses that are relevant to their preferred UNSW program.

Elite Athletes and Performers Program
UNSW has introduced a flexible entry program for students who are elite athletes or performers. Under the new program, applicants for undergraduate places are eligible for bonus points on their ATAR rank (or recognised senior secondary qualification) for entry to their preferred UNSW program. The Elite Athletes and Performers Program supports students both with a flexible entry process and flexible study arrangements while at UNSW.
See full details at Elite Athletes - UNSW website

DipSET - Diploma of Science, Engineering and Technology
DipSET is a diploma program that provides a flexible pathway for students who show the potential to study engineering, but who have a range of gaps in their assumed knowledge and consequently do not meet the necessary entry requirements for Engineering and Science. Application for admission is via UAC .
See full details at DipSET.

If you do not possess any of the qualifications outlined in the Entry Requirements, there are a number of alternative avenues through which you may seek admission to an undergraduate program at UNSW. These include:

  • UNSW University Preparation Program (UPP) - local students only
  • Foundation Year in UNSW or other Group of Eight university.
  • Limited ATAR
  • TAFE Certificate in Tertiary Preparation (TPC)
