Scholarships
Faculty of Engineering scholarships

There are a number of financially attractive scholarships available to research students in the Faculty of Engineering at UNSW in addition to APA, APA(I), IPRS, UPA, UIPA and government and industry funded scholarships.
In many cases teaching assistantships are available to supplement the scholarships.

Selection is based on academic achievement and research potential.
Before applying for a scholarship you should first apply for admission to UNSW. Different scholarships will have different application deadlines. For information about and to apply for postgraduate research scholarships go to the GRS

Applicants should note that the scholarships and their conditions (including availability and value) are subject to review and the closing dates or awards may vary from year to year.
Scholarships are payable for the duration specified above, subject to the continued satisfactory progress of the recipient.

Women in Engineering Research Scholarships
Established in 1993 to assist women of high academic achievement with an interest in a research and/or an academic career; available to outstanding female students to undertake a PhD in one of the Faculty’s ten Schools for Semester One commencement.

Eligibility:

Female applicants must be Australian or New Zealand citizens or permanent residents of Australia; must have completed or expect to complete an appropriate degree with Honours I from a recognised institution; must be commencing in their first year of a full-time PhD research program.

Tenure:

  • $30,000 pa (equivalent to a UNSW Research Excellence Award – 2008 rate shown - for Scholarships awarded from 2009)
  • Scholarship holders in 2009 undertaking a PhD are eligible for a Supplementary Engineering Award (SEA) valued at $8,000 per annum (taxable). Conditions apply. No application is required.
  • Students must commence their research before 31 March of the same year, or the award will be allocated to another applicant.

Applicants for the Women in Engineering Research Scholarship who want to be considered for a Semester 1 Faculty of Engineering Research Scholarship must submit an application under the APA/UPA scheme by the due date (normally 31 October for a Semester 1 commencement, see the Graduate Research School website: www.grs.unsw.edu.au.)

Application must be made on the Women in Engineering Research Scholarship application form. Applications normally close 31 October. Note: the application form pdf must be included.

For international applicants
The University administers the Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (EIPRS) scheme (funded by the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST)) and the University International Postgraduate Awards (UIPA) scheme (funded by UNSW). These scholarships are highly competitive and the required information is available from the UNSW Graduate Research School (GRS): www.grs.unsw.edu.au.
