Postgraduate research programs lead to the awarding of degrees of Doctor or Master and are available across the 10 Schools in the Faculty of Engineering. Each degree includes a comprehensive research induction program and career development courses in commercialisation, project management and communication. Each requires the submission of a thesis embodying the results of an original investigation or design.
The Faculty of Engineering research programs are:
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
Duration: 3–4 years of advanced study; minimum duration for completion is 3 years.
Entry requires: either a completed Masters by Research or a four-year Bachelor’s degree with at least upper second class Honours, both with a substantial research component.
Master of Engineering (ME)
Duration: 1.5–2 years of advanced study; minimum duration for completion is 1.5 years.
Entry requires: an appropriate four-year Bachelor’s degree with Honours that includes a substantial research component.
Master of Science (MSc)
Duration: 1.5–2 years of advanced study; minimum duration for completion is 1.5 years.
Entry requires: an appropriate four-year Bachelor’s degree with Honours that includes a substantial research component.
A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) involves considerably more original work than a Master degree by research. Candidates acquire advanced specialist research training and produce a thesis that summarises the research and provides evidence for independent thought and critical analysis, effective communication and expert knowledge of the discipline in the international context.
A Masters by Research degree requires completion of an original piece of research, more limited in scope and nature to that required for a PhD. Candidates develop mastery of appropriate methodology, and present their findings in the wider context of their discipline.
