The Faculty of Engineering at UNSW is the pre-eminent centre for engineering studies in Australia. With over 60 years of sustained excellence we provide cutting-edge education for undergraduate, postgraduate, continuing education and research students.
The Faculty of Engineering was a foundation faculty of UNSW, which was established as a University of Technology in the Sydney suburb of Ultimo in 1949. The first degree programs in Civil, Mechanical and Mining Engineering commenced with an enrolment of 46 students. By 1967, the Faculty had developed into the major centre for the education of engineers in Australia: of the 7922 undergraduate engineering and applied science students in Australia, 3239 were at UNSW.Today the Faculty of Engineering at UNSW has around 9000 students.
From its relatively humble beginnings, the Faculty of Engineering has grown to become the largest in Australia, with the widest range of engineering disciplines. Over the past 60 years it has emerged as a world leader in engineering education and research, claiming significant achievements in many fields as well as a high level of success in securing competitive grants.
The History of the UNSW Faculty of Engineering 1949-2009 documents the history and growth of the Faculty in detail. It includes student and staff recollections and contains more than 300 photographs. The History of the UNSW Faculty of Engineering can be purchased through UNSW Press.
