Outreach to the Community

The Faculty of Engineering at UNSW maintains strong and extensive links with industry, both locally and internationally. This ensures that education and research focus on providing solutions to real-world problems. We also engage with our wider community and support the work of engineers in developing countries through humanitarian projects.

COLLABORATION WITH INDUSTRY

Faculty partnerships mutually benefit students and industry. Students provide a fresh outlook to industry on issues encountered in real-world scenarios whilst students gain invaluable hands-on experience through industrial training and projects.

For example, 4th mechanical engineering students are testing their design skills with real-world problems experienced by six participating companies, including RailCorp and Victa.

Working in design teams, students compete to present the best solutions to their clients and in doing so, assist to solve genuine issues experienced by those industry participants.

HELPING THOSE IN NEED

Humanitarian projects give engineering students the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in the real world while helping those in need. Students in the Faculty of Engineering are involved in various organisations and projects including the:

Engineers Without Borders (EWB)

Developing Country Project

UNSW HABITAT SOCIETY

The Faculty of Engineering works closely with the UNSW Habitat Society and supports students working on the Global Village program run by the international organisation Habitat for Humanity. In 2009, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering was the UNSW Habitat Society’s largest sponsor when two teams of 14 UNSW students each travelled to the Philippines and Vietnam on the Global Village Program.
