Prizes & Awards

Faculty Prizes and awards:

DEAN'S AWARDS

The Dean's Awards recognise high achieving students enrolled in one of the UNSW Faculty of Engineering's undergraduate programs, including combined degree programs. A maximum of 120 Dean's Awards are available for award each year.

A minimum overall cumulative NSS WAM of 80 is required for receipt of a Dean's Award. Students who maintain this level of academic excellence can expect to graduate with First Class Honours.

ELIGIBILITY

Awards are only available to students who are undertaking studies towards an undergraduate degree within the UNSW Faculty of Engineering who have successfully completed a minimum of 48 Units of Credit at UNSW and have completed at least 24 units of credit in the previous academic year (industrial training/experience and exchange are not counted as ‘completed' units of credit).

Awards are NOT available to students who:

  • have recorded a Fail
  • have completed the final year of an undergraduate degree within the UNSW Faculty of Engineering
  • are Graduands.

SELECTION

Selection is based on a student's overall cumulative NSS WAM. All courses undertaken, not only Engineering courses, are included in the calculation of a student's WAM.

A minimum overall accumulative NSS WAM of 80 is required to be eligible for a Dean's Award.

Awards in each School will be distributed evenly across all stages.

  • Stage 1 status is reached when 48 units of credit are completed.
  • Stage 2 status is normally reached when 96 units of credit are completed (minimum of 93 units of credit required).
  • Stage 3 status is normally reached when 144 units of credit are completed (minimum of 141 units of credit required).
  • Stage 4 status (only applicable for combined programs eg. BE/BSc) is normally reached when 192 units of credit are completed (minimum of 189 units of credit required).

Students may only receive a Dean's Award once for each Stage.

PLEASE NOTE: graduands are not eligible. These students are considered for Honours and the university medal.

Enquiries should be directed to m.lowe@unsw.edu.au.

Faculty of Engineering Student Service Awards

The Faculty of Engineering Student Service Awards were established in 2010 to reward and encourage exceptional and outstanding service to the student community.

THE AWARD

The Faculty of Engineering will provide up to three Faculty of Engineering Student Service Awards each year.

Each Award consists of the presentation of a certificate, an entry on the UNSW Supplementary Transcript, and a monetary component. The 2012 Awards will be valued at $1,000 each.

An Award will only be made when there are nominees of sufficient merit.

Student Service Award Protocol 2012

ELIGIBILITY

i) Faculty of Engineering Students
All students enrolled in a degree program within the UNSW Faculty of Engineering are eligible for consideration for the Award. Students enrolled in the combined Bachelor of Engineering / Bachelor of Laws and the combined Bachelor of Science (Computer Science) / Bachelor of Digital Media are also eligible.

ii) Teams/Groups
Team/Group nominations for the Awards are welcome. Only one award will be presented to the team as a whole.

A team/group normally consists of a student team which has worked together to implement or achieve an outstanding service. Normally nominated groups would not be expected to exceed three members.
In the case of a team nomination, the majority of the team/group must be comprised of Faculty of Engineering students, otherwise the team/group leader should be nominated as an individual.

iii) Previous Awards
Recipients of a Faculty Student Service Award (Individual or Team) are not eligible for nomination in the following year. For example, the recipient of a 2010 Award may not be nominated until nominations open for a 2012 Award.

CRITERIA

The Awards will be for an exceptional and outstanding service to the UNSW or Faculty student community.

Selection will take into account some or all of the following:

  • An exceptional and outstanding achievement or success
  • Outstanding service to the UNSW or Faculty student community. For example:
    - Organising a large event/activity for student participation
    - Sustained involvement in Mentoring schemes
