Students entering first year in 2006 will have a new curriculum designed to develop the outstanding engineers needed for the 21st century.
The new first year has a common core to ensure a broad base in mathematics and science and engineering fundamentals. There is a course in design to introduce students to the practice of engineering and the skills of problem solving. Students then have a wide choice of electives, which they can use to further particular interests or to prepare themselves for their chosen specialisation. Students undecided about their specialisation need not make a decision until the end of first year although a late decision may reduce the number of electives available later in the program.
Students enrolled in all BE programs (except Software Engineering and Bioinformatics) in the Faculty of Engineering will complete five common first year engineering courses plus three elective courses. Students will be able to enter directly into their preferred discipline program or into a general flexible first year program. Students enrolled in the flexible program will need to transfer to a discipline at the end of first year.
