Dr Linlin Ge from the School of Surveying and Spatial Information has been appointed to the inaugural position of Professor of Spatial Information at UNSW and the NSW Department of Lands.
The new position is jointly funded by UNSW, the NSW Government and the Cooperative Research Centre for Spatial Information.
NSW Minister for Lands, Tony Kelly, Dr Ge’s appointment would ensure NSW remained at the forefront of the revolution in the critical disciplines of mapping and spatial information technology.
“Dr Linlin Ge will spend about half his time within Lands providing research leadership and increasing the spatial knowledge development between Government, industry and academia,” said Mr Kelly.
“As the wider community becomes increasingly aware of spatial information through Google Earth and in-car GPS systems, the NSW Government is recognising the value of keeping up with the latest technology by this appointment.”
Department of Lands Director-General and NSW Surveyor General Warwick Watkins said the Department would co-ordinate the activities of the Professorial Chair at UNSW for this project.
“Core areas of focus will include the capture, integration, analysis and application of satellite and aerial sensor data, the development of new earth surface models and precise positioning,” Mr Watkins said.
Dr Ge will commence his new role in January.
