25 June 2008

Aspiring engineers took time out from designing the future to showcase their soccer abilities at the recent UNSW Engineering Sports Day – a welcome return for the event, which has not been held for some years.

Teams from the schools of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Mining Engineering, Chemical Sciences and Engineering, and Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering took part in the day-long sporting round-robin, held on May 15.

In the end the team from Civil and Environmental Engineering emerged victorious, earning a plaque presented by Dean of Engineering, Professor Graham Davies. Mining Engineering were the runners-up.

Student Shaun Kumar, one of the event organisers, said the day was a great success – with the free barbecue proving very popular.

Shaun said all the sausages, hash browns, soft drink and beer on offer had been happily snapped up by 4pm.

“The day was also a fundraising event with donations going to CanTeen,” he said.

Representatives from engineering firm Parsons Brinckerhoff were present for the event, setting up a stand and speaking to students about their company and employment options.
