What is an engineer?
- An engineer is a person who takes scientific knowledge, initiative and inventiveness and applies these attributes to real-world problems. Engineers give shape to our world.
- Engineers are behind everything you can touch, see, taste or hear in your daily lives. Indeed, life would be significantly different without engineers. Everyone knows things like cars, computers, buildings, aeroplanes, roads and bridges are all products of imaginative engineering. But so are film special effects, water-saving devices and synthetic human tissue replacements.
- Without engineering we would have little progress or improvement in the quality of life. Engineers go to design ways to improve the quality of life and avoid the health problems in the first place.

Where can engineering take you?
Engineering is an integral part of all the technologies that make life possible, sustainable and enjoyable, from the way that clean water supplies have increased life expectancy to the development of data networks that have changed the way nations interact. Engineering covers an enormous range of disciplines from Biomedical Engineering, through Telecommunications, Computing and Photovoltaics to Petroleum Engineering. They are similar in their innovative, but methodical approaches to problems and their use of advanced computer technology, but in their applications and working environments, they couldn't be more different.
