UNSW Engineering Course Overview

Year 1 - The first year of an engineering degree at UNSW is fairly general and provides students with the basic foundations of engineering studies. Students undertake courses such as mathematics, physics, design and computing, as well as introductory courses in their chosen discipline. A design course has been introduced into first year in order for students to get a better feel for what engineering is about from the very beginning.

Year 2 - In second year, engineering degrees start to diverge. Students start focusing on the core underlying principles of their chosen discipline. They are introduced to new concepts and practical skills used further on in the course. Second year subjects also consolidate the essential skills students gained in first year.

Year 3 - Third year incorporates advanced core engineering subjects as well as a major design project. Here students have the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge to the real world. By this stage, students are familiar with the laboratory equipment and have developed competent practical skills. In a design project, students get valuable hands-on experience in project management, problem-solving, marketing, budgeting and teamwork - all qualities necessary that make a good engineer. In third year, students also start thinking about streams they wish to specialise in and have the chance to start choosing some electives.

Year 4 - The final year of an engineering program encompasses substantial choice. Students choose professional electives in areas where they wish to specialise. The main component of final year is the thesis project. This is typically a year-long project where students complete a research paper in a subject matter of their choice. A student's thesis has the largest weighting in their whole degree. Engineering management and ethics subjects are also taken in final year as UNSW believes in well-rounded graduates.
