In the Faculty of Engineering, team work, outstanding individuals and a high level of cross-disciplinary cooperation combine to produce innovative applied and theoretical research.

The Faculty is renowned for:

  • Excellent research performance nationally and internationally, with the establishment of Research Centres on campus and strong links with other institutions through Cooperative Research Centres.
  • Outstanding success in securing national competitive grants such as Australia Research Council Discovery and Linkage Grants and collaborative research funding, as well as industry and other community grants.
  • Major contributions to UNSW’s top ranking position amongst Australian universities in terms of per capita research grants, publications output and government-funded joint research projects with major overseas universities.
  • The highest number of engineering research student enrolments in Australia.
  • Availability of substantial financial research student support. A large range of PhD Research Scholarships including an annual Women in Engineering Research Scholarship to encourage more females to enter academia in the field of engineering and the provision of teaching assistantships for students holding Faculty Research Awards, Australian Postgraduate Awards, and International Postgraduate Research Scholarships.

The Faculty undertakes research within a range of engineering themes including:

Research scholars participate in an exciting and professional program - from induction as a research student with the Faculty of Engineering to acquisition of advanced skills in research methodology. Positive attitudes towards safety and ethical practice are developed.

In addition, our students have the opportunity to enhance their career skills in such areas as:

How to Apply for Admission to a Postgraduate Research Degree

  1. Read the Postgraduate Information Booklet for a description of research areas and laboratory facilities.
  2. Visit the Postgraduate Research website to find out about entry requirements and further information.
  3. Visit the Faculty website to search for names of staff members with research interests in particular areas.
  4. Visit the School website to find out about staff research interests or contact the postgraduate coordinator, who can assist in putting you in touch with potential supervisors.
  5. Obtain and complete the local/international application for admission form.
  6. Prepare a research proposal, which must be submitted with your application form.
