HOME : ENGINEERING STUDENT CENTRE : FLEXIBLE FIRST YEAR PROGRAM

The Flexible First Year program is ideal for students who know they want to be an engineer but are unsure which direction to take.

The first year of engineering study has a common core of subjects plus a wide choice of electives which allows you to study a number of areas that appeal to you without making a formal commitment until the end of your first year. For further information on the program structure click here.

For students currently enrolled in the Flexible First Year program the Engineering Student Centre is your 'School Office' and should be your first port of call regarding any administrative, academic or enrolment related matters. This includes information on:

  • Courses to enrol in - including advice on prerequisite courses, course selection and understanding the difference between required and recommended electives. We can also show you how to utilise the Online Handbook for accessing information on Course Selection and Program Structure.
  • Program structures for specific engineering disciplines - we can help you to understand the difference between a program and a plan, where to get information on program structures for the different engineering disciplines and offer advice on choosing your area of specialisation for the remainder of your engineering degree or put you in contact with the appropriate person.
  • Progression - to continue on in a specific engineering discipline after your first year, you need to meet certain requirements including successfully passing 30 Units of Credit and having 'Good Academic Standing'. If you don't meet these requirements or are having difficulties with your studies at any stage, you'll need to come and see us.
  • Transferring into an engineering discipline for second year - at some stage, usually at the end of the first year, you need to transfer into a specific engineering discipline for second year and beyond. We can provide you with information on how to do this. Visit the Internal Program Transfer Website for further information.
  • Much, much more - we can provide assistance with a range of matters and where we can't; we'll be able to refer you to someone who can.
